Manchin: ‘Military Might’ Won’t Change Landscape in Syria

by Andrew Johnson

Military strikes will do little to affect or deter Syrian president Bashar Assad, according to Senator Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). He pushed for an alternative diplomatic solution he is crafting with Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D., N.D.) that would allow Assad a window of time to hand over control of his chemical weapons to the international community.

“We know that if money or military might would change the landscape of that part of the world, Andrea, we would have done it now as the United States,” Manchin told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell. “We know that that wasn’t going to change, so we’ve been pushing for this [alternative].”
