House Armed Services Committee vice chairman Mac Thornberry expressed deep skepticism over a Russian-led proposal that would require Syria to put chemical weapons in international control. While he raised concerns over trusting the Russians, Thornberry also doubted the logistical feasibility of the plan.
“Even if they had good intentions, then logistically just doing this — trying to round up all the chemical weapons in Syria in the middle of a civil war, putting them in safe hands, et cetera — would be just about impossible,” the Texas Republican said on Fox News on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s a mess and everything associated with Syria is a mess.”
Thornberry indicated that he was undecided about voting for authorization for military force in Syria, and would likely decide after the president’s address tonight.
