New Bill Would Mandate That Obama Join Obamacare Exchanges

by Katrina Trinko

A new bill would force President Barack Obama to join the same health-care exchanges Obamacare will result in many other Americans being forced to join.

“Now you’d think that if a bill is named after you, you’d want to be under it,” says Senator Mike Enzi (R., Wyo.), who is introducing the bill in the Senate with Senators David Vitter (R., La.) and Dean Heller (R., Nev.). “And so we’re hoping the president will take that approach, and help us get this passed, so Congress and the Administration have to live under whatever the American people have to live under.”

In the House, Representatives Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.), Tom Cotton (R., Ark.), and Dennis Ross (R., Fla.) are introducing companion legislation.

The legislation would require congressional members, their staff, President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and the White House staff to sign up for the Obamacare exhanges. None of them would still be eligible for the existing federal employees’ health-care plan.

In August, the Office of Personnel Management decreed that members of Congress and their staff would have to purchase insurance on the Obamacare exchanges, but that they’d continue receiving the same premium contributions they received under their existing health-care plans.
