WSJ’s Gigot: Obama May Want Shutdown to Make Play for 2014

by Andrew Johnson

Paul Gigot, editor of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page, argued that President Obama may in fact be positioning himself in ongoing budget negotiations for a government shutdown in an effort to win back the House in the 2014 midterm election.

“I think his gamble is to take back the House in 2014, which is why I think he may want a shutdown,” Gigot said on ABC’s This Week panel. “Because that’s the way he can blame it on the Republicans, blame any economic fallout on the House Republicans, and say, ‘You’ve got to give me the majority for the next two years.’”

Fellow panelists Cokie Roberts and Matthew Dowd more or less agreed with with Gigot, saying that although President Obama doesn’t want a shutdown, he’s “probably not opposed to it.”
