Va. Governor Race Tightens

by Sterling Beard

Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican gubernatorial nominee for Virginia, has cut Terry McAuliffe’s lead in half in the latest Quinnipiac poll.

With seven weeks until the election, the poll shows him trailing Democratic nominee McAuliffe by only 3 percentage points, 44–41, which is within the poll’s margin of error. Cuccinelli boasts a greater percentage of voters who say he has the experience to be governor, 58 percent to McAuliffe’s 47 percent, and leads McAuliffe 44–40 among voters who say that honesty is extremely important.

An August 21 Quinnipiac poll showed McAuliffe leading Cuccinelli by six percentage points, 48-42.

In other good news for Cuccinelli, Citizens United is spending $300,000 in northern Virginia to air Fast Terry, a 29-minute documentary that is especially critical of two of McAuliffe’s business ventures: Greentech, an electric car company now under federal investigation (though there is nothing to suggest McAulife is under investigation), and Franklin Pellets, a biofuel company that has had difficulty gettnig underway. This will be the second promotional effort for the film; Citizens United previously spent six figures to air the ad statewide, but this buy will focus solely on northern Virginia.
