Iranian President: We Will Never Develop Nuclear Weapons

by Alec Torres

Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, says that his administration never plans to develop nuclear weapons. “Under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever,” he said in an interview aired on NBC News Wednesday evening. His comments came after President Obama wrote a letter to Rouhani soon after the Iranian election in June saying that the U.S. is, as the White House put it today, “ready to resolve the nuclear issue in a way that allows Iran to demonstrate that its nuclear program is for exclusively peace purposes.”

Last week, Rouhani raised the possibility of a “win-win” agreement between the West and Iran over its nuclear program.

Whether or not Rouhani’s words will be backed up with concrete action is yet to be seen, but the new president’s tone does seem to be a marked shift from the more inflammatory rhetoric of of former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
