State Dept. Refuses to Call Syria Misreporting Chemical-Weapons Stores ‘Unacceptable’
In a daily press briefing on Wednesday, State Department spokesman Marie Harf refused to say that it would be unacceptable if Syria did not fully report its chemical weapons to the U.S. as part of the recently negotiated Russia deal.
Harf said a Syrian failure to give full account of their chemical weapons would constitute “noncompliance” with the U.S.-Russian agreement, but explained she didn’t “want to use the terms ‘acceptable’ or ‘unacceptable.’”
“We’re going to take a look at what the Syrian regime comes to us with,” she said, when responding to questions about how complete the Assad regime’s accounting of its arsenal would have to be.
