Senate majority leader Harry Reid swiftly shot down House GOP leadership’s request for a conference committee on the continuing resolution to fund the government tonight, and demanded the House pass a “clean” funding measure instead.
“We will not go to conference with a gun to our head,” Reid said on the Senate floor late Monday, with roughly an hour to spare before government funding expires at midnight. “We will not go to conference until we get a clean CR.”
Reid, who accused Republicans of wanting to shut the government down to satisfy tea-party elements within the GOP, said the Senate would only consider a conference once the House has passed a clean resolution to fund the government for six weeks.
Following a full day of back-and-forth between the two chambers, Senator Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) warned the House: “Don’t send us another one of these gizmos.”
“There’s one way to solve [the impasse], pass a clean CR,” he said.
