Top House Democrats rejected the House GOP’s proposal in the government funding bill to end a subsidy for lawmakers and congressional staff to purchase health insurance under Obamacare as a distraction, with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi accusing top Republicans of being “fakers.”
“And you know what else? They’re fakers. They want [the measure ending the subsidy] to not prevail because it harms them. But they want us to vote against it over and over again,” Pelosi told reporters at a press conference at the Capitol only minutes before a government shutdown.
“That’s not a real issue. The issue is whether we keep government, on behalf of the American people, open. That’s a distraction and not real. And very frankly, in my view, the people who offered [the amendment ending the subsidies], don’t believe it,” said Democratic whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland.
“The issue is whether or not the Congress of the United States will take responsibility for what the American people expect of us – and that is making sure their government is open, serving them, serving them effectively, and not abandoning them,” Hoyer added.
