GOP Sees Political Advantage in Calling for Negotiations

by Andrew Stiles

President Obama and Speaker Boehner on Tuesday reiterated their respective positions on the debt limit — Obama won’t negotiate with “hostage takers,” and Boehner wants the president to sit down for a “conversation.”

For what it’s worth, a number of GOP aides tell me they are looking at polls showing that Obama’s refusal to negotiate is a losing position with voters, particularly among independents. Accordingly, they plan to keep pushing that message, with videos such as this one just released by the Senate GOP Conference:

Last week, Senator Rand Paul (R., Ky.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) were recorded having a private conversation about this very issue. “I don’t think [Democrats] poll-tested ‘We won’t negotiate,’” Paul said ”I think it’s awful for them to say that over and over again.”
