In California, Non-Physicians Can Now Perform Abortions

by Katrina Trinko

If you thought the take-away from the Kermit Gosnell case, where we saw women seeking abortions get horrific and dangerous “medical” treatment, was that, regardless of your views on abortion, there  should be increased awareness of making the procedure safe for women … you aren’t the governor of California.

Yesterday, California governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that allows certain medical personnel who are not doctors, such as midwives and nurse practioners, to perform abortions during the first trimester.

That sets California apart from the rest of the nation: Most states in recent years, if passing abortion-related legislation, are either placing restrictions on abortions and/or adding regulations and conditions that affect those who provide abortions.
