Starbucks Launches Anti-Shutdown Petition Campaign

Starbucks wants the government shutdown to end, and it thinks its customers do too.

Beginning tomorrow, the national coffee chain will have petitions available for customers to sign at all of its 11,000 U.S. locations. The petitions will call for reopening the government, passing a long-term budget deal before the year is out, and ensuring that federal debt is paid on time.

Chief executive officer Howard Schultz will encourage the CEOs of other companies to sign the petition, which will also be printed in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. In 2011, Schultz campaigned to get other CEOs to halt campaign contributions to politicians until they stopped fighting over the debt ceiling.

This isn’t the first time the company has tempted political controversy — last month, Schultz requested that customers not bring firearms into their stores. Last December, the chain asked its employees to write “come together” on cups to urge Congress to end bickering over the fiscal cliff.
