Palin, Cruz, Lee Talk to Protesters at WW II Memorial Who Moved Barricades to White House

A sizeable number of Americans attended an event at the World War II memorial today which included speeches from Governor Sarah Palin, and Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, and culminated in people carrying the barricades blocking the World War II memorial to the White House gates.

Since the World War II memorial was barricaded in the aftermath of the federal government shutdown, people — including veterans who journeyed hundreds of miles to see the memorial — have slipped through them.

“Let me ask a simple question: Why is the federal government spending money to erect barricades to keep veterans out of this area?” Cruz thundered.

Palin appeared to say “barricades” as “barrycades,” a reference to President Obama.

We are here to honor our vets,” she told those assembled. “You look around though, and you see these barrycades and you have to ask yourself, is this any way that a commander-in-chief would show his respect, his gratitude to our military?”

Lee took the opportunity to take aim at Obamacare.  “This belongs to you. This does not belong to the government, it belongs to the people,” he said. “Are we willing to let them shut us out of what is rightfully ours? Will we surrender our freedom? Should we give our health care to an organization that would shut us out of this?”

The crowd shouted “no” in response.

From the Associated Press’s report:

As the crowd entered the memorial plaza, they chanted “Tear down these walls” and “You work for us.” They sang “God bless America” and other songs.

Sunday’s rally was more political. A protest by truckers converged with a rally by a group called the Million Vet March at the memorial. Participants cut the plastic links between metal barriers at the National Park Service site and pushed them aside.

Later, some protesters carried metal barricades that look like bicycle racks from the memorial to the White House and stacked them up outside the gates, confronting police in riot gear. Some protesters carried signs reading “Impeach Obama.”
