No Republican lawmaker told President Obama, “I cannot even stand to look at you,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said this afternoon.
The attribution of the quote to an unnamed Republican was the result of a “miscommunication in the readout” of a meeting between House Republicans and President Obama, which had been given to Senate Democrats, Carney said.
“We regret that,” Carney said during the daily White House press briefing, but would not elaborate on details.
Senator Dick Durbin (D., Ill.), the majority whip, alleged on his official Facebook page this past Sunday that a “GOP House Leader” directed the comment at the president during budget negotiations.
“What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who has just said something so disrespectful?” Durbin wrote.
