Al Sharpton Stands Up for Tea Party. . . Sort Of

by Andrew Johnson

In a rare moment, Al Sharpton offered a somewhat impartial response to claims from his guests that the Tea Party is full of “extremists.” He said the political movement has been “painted with a big brush” because of the offensive or inappropriate conduct of some of its members, but that the characterizations are unfair to those who don’t engage in such behavior.

“In fairness, I don’t think all [of] the Tea Party were extremists,” a measured Sharpton said on Monday night. “I think some that joined the Tea Party did so because they have genuine feelings — that I may disagree with — but they were not extremists.”

He said the Left has had to deal with similar generalizations due to its more extreme members.
