Baucus: ‘Train Wreck’ Comment Being ‘Twisted’ to Malign Obamacare

Text

Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus (D., Mont.), who famously described Obamacare’s implementation as a “train wreck” at a hearing earlier this year, accused opponents of unfairly using that comment to attack the health-care law. Nonetheless, Baucus called the launch thus far “unacceptable” and said it was “disappointing that members of the administration did not see the problems coming.”

He did not repeat the “train wreck” phrase – saying only that he had ”used two words” — but claimed his comment had been “twisted and used to malign” the law. Below are Baucus’s opening remarks from the April hearing, in which he offers a blistering critique of the Obama administration’s readiness for the law’s implementation.

Last week, Baucus compared the rollout to Humpty Dumpty, and stated he would be open to a delay if the problems facing Healthcare.gov were not fixed soon.
