Police agencies often lack the resources to hunt down people wanted on minor charges, and huge backlogs result when these cases stay on the books for years. Police and court officials in Jersey City have found a novel way to address this problem. Small-time scofflaws are being invited to turn themselves in with the inducement of quick resolution to their cases, often without jail time. NJ.com, reports on the four-day “safe surrender” program being conducted at the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, where, as of yesterday morning, more than 750 people had surrendered to authorities, including a man who had flown in from Florida. Thousands were expected to turn themselves in by the time the program ends on Saturday. (One wonders if they can also receive absolution while they’re there.)
