Yesterday, I highlighted the vicious, sexist attacks a Democratic state representative in New Hampshire launched against Republican Marlinda Garcia, a fellow state rep now running for Congress in a highly competitive district. His response has been boorish to say the least, even after evidence has now surfaced he had been reprimanded by the state-house speaker last year for shoving Garcia into her seat as he bulled his way to the front of the House chamber.
Representative Peter Sullivan, a self-described leader of the “progressive bloc” in the New Hampshire legislature, began his war of insults against Garcia last week when he posted comments on his Twitter account comparing her to Kim Kardashian, the reality-TV star who rose to fame after a sex tape of her surfaced, and referring to her as a “lightweight” in “stiletto heels.” When criticized, he issued a mock apology — to Kardashian, for comparing her to a “right-wing crazy” such as Garcia.
Now the website NH Journal has obtained a copy of a letter that then–house speaker O’Brien sent to Sullivan in April 2012 privately reprimanding him for physically pushing aside several of his colleagues:
In an effort to come to the front of Representatives Hall to register a protest with the House Clerk in a hastened manner, you brusquely exited your aisle, barging into fellow members rudely and, in one case, knocking another representative, who was attempting to get up to let you by, back into her seat. This type of behavior is unacceptable on the House floor.
O’Brien noted in the letter that this was the second reported time Sullivan had engaged in “inappropriate behavior” on the house floor. Sources told NH Journal that the legislator that Sullivan knocked back in her chair was Marilinda Garcia.
Sullivan surfaced yesterday to respond to my column, writing on his Facebook page that “I was just attacked by the National Review. My life is truly complete.” He added that apparently I was “smitten with Miss Marilinda, and is butthurt that the mainstream media hasn’t sufficiently hounded me.”
Well, the New Hampshire Union Leader, the state’s only statewide paper, has now taken notice of Sullivan’s bull-in-a-china-shop style and his refusals to apologize. But Democratic officeholders in New Hampshire have declined to criticize Sullivan, even after he took to Facebook early yesterday to further defend his offensive posts:
Yeah, I said it, and I stand by it. The comparison is accurate. Garcia is a creepy pseudo-Christian right wing extremist who gets a free pass because she doesn’t look the part.
Well, I can only respond that Peter Sullivan continues to play the part of a bully and a boor to perfection. This is one Democratic War on a Woman where apparently no apology will be issued.
