Colo. Baker Willing to Go to Jail for Not Baking Cake for Same-Sex Wedding

Jack Phillips, the Colorado man at the center of a recent court ruling that ordered he agree to cater a same-sex wedding, will stand by his religious convictions in the face of prosecution.

When asked if he would be willing to go to jail over the issue, Philips told Fox News, “If that’s what it takes, I guess I would be. I don’t plan on giving up my religious beliefs. . . . This is who I am, it’s what I believe.”

“I don’t feel that I should participate in their wedding, and when I do a cake, I feel like I’m participating in the ceremony or the event or the celebration that the cake is for,” he said.

Last week, a judge found that Phillips’s Masterpiece Cakeshop had violated discrimination laws by turning away a same-sex couple in 2012. While the judge did not impose a penalty, the bakery will face repercussions if it refuses to make cakes for same-sex weddings in the future. Phillips’s attorney said the baker is considering appealing the ruling.
