Mona and I have done a pre-Christmas Need to Know. We discuss some of the events of the moment, not excluding Pajama Boy and Duck Man. We talk about Obama (not flatteringly, though I hate to spoil the surprise). We talk about some of his predecessors — specifically two Bushes and one Nixon. (There may be some others, I don’t remember.)
Toward the end of our discussion, we talk about a touchy issue for conservative parents: sending your kids to college. Mona’s youngest is headed to college next year. It seems the lucky campus will be Penn. Word to the wise: Don’t say “water buffalo.” (I think you can Google that ancient controversy, if you’re unacquainted with it.)
Finally, we have some Christmas music. We have a dose of George Shearing, and a famous track from Leontyne Price (“O Holy Night”). We also have a dose of opera: the Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel. This is not Christmas music, per se, but it’s certainly beautiful, pure, and holy.
And it’s by the original Engelbert Humperdinck: not the Vegas singer (an artist in his own right) but the German composer from whom he took that remarkable name.
