Judge Rules Chicago’s Gun Ban Unconstitutional

Text

A federal judge ruled on Monday that Chicago’s law banning the sale of guns within the city is unconstitutional and “goes too far” in restricting gun rights. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, which, critics of the city’s policies point out, have had little effect in reducing its gun violence.

Bloomberg reports that the magistrate, district judge Edmond Chang, has delayed the rule going into effect in order to give city authorities time to respond.

Chicago had previously banned handguns within the city in 1982 until the Supreme Court struck that ban down in 2010.
