McCain on Gates Memoir: ‘I Would Have Waited’

by Patrick Brennan

Senator John McCain said this morning that he has a great deal of respect for former secretary of defense Robert Gates, but that he didn’t really approve of the timing of Gates’s recently released memoir. “If I had given him advice, I would have waited,” McCain told CNN’s Candy Crowley. Gates couldn’t be expected to wait until the U.S. has ended its engagement in Afghanistan, McCain said, but he could have held off “a little longer.”

Gates’s “letting loose,” McCain said, “surprised all of us.” The senator emphasized, though, that he’s “a great admirer” of Secretary Gates, and understands that he’s “frustrated.” “I also respect his ability to voice his opinion,” McCain said.
