Group of Amazon Workers Say No to Unionization

by Alec Torres

In a 21–6 vote announced Wednesday night, Amazon equipment maintenance and repair technicians at a distribution center in Delaware decided against unionization, Reuters reports.

The vote against joining the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers (IAM) did not affect the other 1,500 or so workers at the Middletown, Del., plant.

Amazon has previously clashed with labor over unionization in Germany, but, in America, the company hasn’t seen many labor conflicts. “Our employees have made it clear that they prefer a direct connection with Amazon,” Mary Osako, an Amazon spokesman, said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters.

However, IAM is calling foul. “The workers at Amazon faced intense pressure from managers and anti-union consultants hired to suppress this organizing drive,” a spokesman for the union said. IAM will continue to press for the unionization of Amazon workers.
