Planned Parenthood Honors MLK Jr. by Touting Its Efforts

by Andrew Johnson

In remembrance of Martin Luther King Day, Planned Parenthood claimed its health-care work, including the provision of abortion, “celebrates Dr. King’s legacy.” President Cecile Richards added that her organization’s efforts to address ”health care inequality,” in part by supporting Obamacare, help combat the racism the civil-rights icon dedicated his life to confronting.

Richards praised Planned Parenthood and the new health-care law for addressing the problem of access to health care, which she said is “undeniably linked” to “racism, sexism, and discrimination.” She went on to applaud King for “his role in furthering reproductive health and rights.”

Abortion-rights advocates have used King’s receipt of Planned Parenthood’s Margaret Sanger Award for Human Rights in 1966 to suggest that he would support Planned Parenthood’s work, although Alveda King, his niece and now a pro-life activist, has argued he would oppose Planned Parenthood’s abortion services. She notes that the civil-rights icon did not accept the award in person, leaving his wife to do it for him, and that in the remarks she provided at the ceremony, King did not voice support for abortion.
