Art Laffer to Be Issa’s SOTU Guest

by Patrick Brennan

NRO hears that Art Laffer, the well-known economist and godfather of Reagan’s supply-side tax cuts, will be the guest of Representative Darrell Issa, the California Republican who chairs the House Oversight Committee, at the State of the Union tonight.

Laffer’s work over the course of his career, including efforts to slash the top marginal tax rate, certainly provides a contrast to what’s expected from Obama’s speech, which is anticipated to focus on income inequality and specific measures such as raising the minimum wage. Laffer is an ardent opponent of the minimum wage (once calling it the “Black Teenage Unemployment Act”) and he opposes extending unemployment benefits for Americans out of work for more than 26 weeks, another measure the president has been pushing. Recently, he’s become an advocate of corporate tax reform — something the president may not address in his speech, though the Senate has been working on the issue.
