That anonymous Republican congressman said, “If you go to town halls people say things like, ‘These people have different cultural customs than we do.’ And that’s code for race.” A few months ago I wrote an article for NR against this view: an article arguing, that is, that there are valid cultural concerns related to immigration policy and that these concerns are not “code for race.” I think these concerns are more widely felt than they are articulated, which makes it easier for people like our anonymous congressman to conflate them, thoughtlessly, with racism; a conflation that in turn makes it less likely that they will be articulated.
