House to Vote on Clean Debt-Limit Bill

by Patrick Brennan

Tuesday night, the House will vote on a “clean” debt-ceiling increase, extending the federal government’s borrowing limit for the next year.

House leadership had previously considered bringing a measure that would increase the debt limit and restore some of the reductions to cost-of-living adjustments in military pensions, hoping that would attract some Republican and Democrat votes. Speaker John Boehner, however, couldn’t get the votes from his conference to make it feasible. “It’s the fact that we don’t have 218 votes,” he said. “And when you don’t have 218 votes, you have nothing. We’ve seen that before, we see it again.”
