Brewer Vetoes S.B. 1062

Text

After pressure from both sides and much anticipation, Arizona’s Republican governor, Jan Brewer, rejected the state’s controversial Senate Bill 1062, which would have protected businesses’ freedom to provide services in line with their religious beliefs. Critics of the law said the law would have allowed businesses to discriminate against and refuse service to gay customers.

“This bill, 1062, does not address a specific or pressing concern related to religious liberty in Arizona,” Brewer said in her brief remarks on Wednesday. She warned that the “broadly worded” bill “could result in unintended and negative consequences.”

Brewer assured supporters of religious freedom that she has a record of protecting such liberties, but that the current bill would “create more problems than it purports to solve.”
