Hilary Clinton Compares Vladimir Putin to Hitler

Text

On Tuesday, former first lady and secretary of state Hilary Clinton compared Russian President Vladimir Putin’s campaign in Ukraine to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s resettling of Germans living outside of Germany in the 1930s.

Clinton made the comparison while speaking at a private benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Long Beach.

“Now if this sounds familiar, it’s what Hitler did back in the 30s,” said Clinton, explaining that Hitler resettled ethnic Germans who were living in places like Czechoslovakia and Romania. “Hitler kept saying they’re not being treated right. ‘I must go and protect my people,’ and that’s what’s gotten everybody so nervous.”

Clinton, whose tenure at the top of the U.S. State Department is remembered in part for the failed attempt to “reset” relations between the United States and Putin’s Russia, went on to say that Putin “believes his mission is to restore Russian greatness” and that when he looks at Ukraine “he sees a place that he believes is by its very nature part of Mother Russia.”

Clinton said if Russia and Ukraine can reach a compromise, then negotiations may take place in Crimea.

“So everybody is hoping that there will be a negotiation but a negotiation that respects Ukraine and doesn’t ratify a reoccupation by Russia of Crimea,” said Clinton.
