Tone Deaf

by Jay Nordlinger

Our Paul Ryan series continues today, with Part II. One of the subjects I talked with him about was the vice-presidential debate — the one in 2012, with Joe Biden. I said that, watching the debate at home, I thought Biden was blowing it, big-time. The reason was, he was behaving like such a jerk: snorting, rolling his eyes, interrupting, etc. He made Al Gore in his first debate against George W. Bush look positively decorous. Did Ryan, too, think Biden was blowing it? Yes. “I was excited,” Ryan said.

I think this discussion has died down, but, for a while, lots of people worried about, or pretended to worry about, the Republican “tone.” Our side had a bad “tone.” I thought this was odd. On the Democratic side, they had Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The parallels on the Republican side were Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and Reince Priebus.

We were the ones with the “tone” problem? Someone can’t hear, and it may be me, but I doubt it.
