Barack-etology: Pres Sends Message to Eastern Aggressors by Picking Spartans as National Champs

by Andrew Johnson

One of the few areas where President Obama is undeniably conservative: his March Madness picks.

In ESPN’s annual visit to the White House, the president went with conventional favorites Florida, Arizona, Michigan State, and defending champs Louisville in the Final Four. In the championship game, he predicted, Tom Izzo and Michigan State will bring the championship back to East Lansing by beating Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals.

Both teams are 4 seeds, but are considered some of the favorites to make the Final Four. Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight, which correctly predicted President Obama’s election twice, says Louisville is the favorite to win the national championship.

“I know these are not imaginative picks, but I think they’re the right ones,” the president said.

During the process, ESPN’s Andy Katz asked the president what he would do if he won $1 billion Warren Buffett has promised to anyone who fills out a perfect bracket. ”I’m sure somebody would ask me to pay down more of the federal debt; Michelle might want a few shoes,” he said.

Even though the president play it safe every year, he doesn’t have a great track record. According to Rant Sports, Obama has picked the tournament winner only once, which was his first year in office. In the last four years, he has only predicted 25 percent of the Final Four teams correctly.
