Loud Enough for Ya?

Impromptus today is titled “Blown Out, Part I.” It’s the beginning of a series (just two parts) on the “overamplification of American life.” This series expands on a piece we had in NR. A friend of mine e-mails the following: “I can’t stand hearing someone’s music through his headphones when I’m on a train. I always ask such people to turn the music down, and they act incredulous: How could I possibly hear the music they’re pumping into their ears from several seats away?”

Actually, I’m not sure what such listeners do is listen; I think they may be administering something like self-anesthetization.
