The Farcical World in Which We Live

A barely discernable thumbnail photo of me appears (along with dozens of other lawyers) on the cover of the recent issue of the American Lawyer magazine under a caption reading “What’s wrong with this photo?” (Cue Jonah Golderg). The editors’ complaint is my (and scores of others like me) apparent and insoluble whiteness. The American Lawyer highlights the accomplishments of various lawyers throughout the year. In this cover story on the lack of diversity in the ranks of top law firms, the editors lament that only, of the many lawyers that they have chosen to feature for their involvement in “top deals and suits,” “just three are black.”  Perhaps the better caption would have been, “What’s wrong with our editorial standards?”
