The War on Joni Ernst Begins

Democratic congressman Bruce Braley, who’s facing off against Republican state representative Joni Ernst for an empty Iowa Senate seat this fall, has a new ad attacking his opponent (both of them won their primaries on Tuesday). Notice anything about the anthropomorphic actor Braley’s campaign picked to represent the woman who might be Iowa’s first female federal office holder ever? This is hardly a big deal — but imagine the liberal reaction if Republicans literally used a chick to represent a female candidate in an ad.

A more substantive note about the ad: It’s pretty consciously attacking Ernst from the right — it’s about calling her out for breaking campaign promises, but it even takes her to task for voting to raise, rather than cut, spending in nominal terms. I’m sure Braley will hold Harry Reid’s feet to the fire on an issue like that.
