Reid Floats Reintroducing Federal Gun-Control Bill

Text

Gosh, a gun-control proposal that isn’t completely unrelated to the shooting that yielded it. Per Politico:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called on the Senate Monday to pass background checks on guns in the wake of a Sunday shooting in Las Vegas that killed two police officers.

Coming to the floor with “a lot of sadness,” the Nevada Democrat paid tribute to the two officers killed at a Nevada pizzeria “for no reason other than the weirdness, craziness of this couple,” referring to Jerad and Amanda Miller, who police say killed three people on Sunday before killing themselves. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Jerad Miller has a lengthy criminal history.

Reid said that the “American people are depending” on the Senate to pass background checks to keep guns out of the hands of people like the Millers, his first unprompted mention of revisiting gun legislation in the Senate in months.

One of the shooters does appear to have been barred from owning, buying, or keeping firearms. The Daily Kos records a post from Infowars:

“Jerad, baby, I love you with all my heart and I’ll stand behind you no matter what,” wrote Amanda, whose avatar appears to be Amanda Miller. “It’s true that its not fair that i can’t have a gun because you live with me. I know its not right that my rights get taken away from me because I live in the same home as you but I would love to see them try and enforce that. My love for you is deep and forever and f-ck what they have to say cause they have no right to do what they say is not right.”

Nevada has no checks on private sales.

Now, it is unclear where the shooter got his firearm, and whether he bought the gun after he was barred from doing so. (If he did, this would put Reid’s proposal squarely into line with the incident he used to sell it.) Either way, merely by possessing a firearm he broke a bunch of laws here.

But that’s part of the point, isn’t it? One of the killers ran through the rules and then wrote, “I would love to see them try and enforce that.” Then she helped shoot two cops. When skeptics say that these laws won’t achieve their desired end, which is not to prosecute killers but to prevent them from killing, this is exactly what we mean.
