Graham: Obama Administration ‘Got What They Wanted’ in Iraq

Text

The claim that the Obama administration wasn’t able to leave residual forces in Iraq is “absolutely a lie,” according to Senator Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.). The Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and the government were willing to accept an American force, but the Obama administration was insistent on withdrawing troops, Graham said, and is ultimately to blame for the worsening situation in the country.

“They got what they wanted — the Obama administration wanted to say, ‘I ended the war in Iraq; I’m going to end the war in Afghanistan,’” he said on State of the Union. “This was as predictable as the sun rising in the East.”

Additionally, says Graham, Maliki is not the right man for the job: “He should resign — he’s incapable of bringing the Sunnis back in to the fold.”
