Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus announced on Tuesday that the party’s 2016 national convention will be held in Cleveland. Dallas had been considered as the other finalist.
Republican leadership is presumably hoping that holding its largest event in the swing state of Ohio will help the party come Election Day. President Obama has won the state in both of the last elections, and no candidate has won the presidency without winning Ohio in more than 50 years.
Dates are still not set for the event, but it is expected to be held in either late June or mid-July. The Democratic National Committee has not yet selected a location for its convention.
