Cheney: Negotiated Settlement with the PA Not Possible as Long as Hamas Is Involved

by Molly Wharton

Former vice president Dick Cheney doesn’t think a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Israel right now is possible because of the role Hamas has in the Palestinian government.

Hamas is “absolutely sworn to fight to the death for the destruction of Israel,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday. “As long as they’re part of a governing coalition . . . there’s no way that they’re going to agree to any kind of a settlement. It’s just not in their basic fundamental belief system.”

Cheney added that the United States needs to recognize Hamas as “a terrorist organization of the first order, absolutely pledged to the destruction of Israel.”
