Stop Fear-Mongering Ebola Doctors!

by Wesley J. Smith

I have been very disturbed by the blatant and innuendo-style fear mongering among some conservative pundits, personalities, and media regarding the American doctors infected with Ebola and brought home for the best of care at Emory University. Example, The Donald:

The U.S. cannot allow EBOLA infected people back. People that go to far away places to help out are great-but must suffer the consequences!

Then there is the often unreasonable Michael Savage:

And yet, the morons who are running America are bringing infected patients to America, allegedly to treat them, but we all know it is an untreatable disease. It can only be managed. The entire story of bringing these Ebola patients from West Africa to America stinks to high Heaven. There is much more involved.

The rest of his piece is pure paranoia.

Talk about playing into the conservative stereotype as scientifically ignorant and profoundly uncompassionate! But here are some facts that need to be remembered:

1. These doctors selflessly sought to keep a potentially dangerous epidemic in check;

2. They acted in the best traditions of medicine to succor suffering humanity;

3. Ebola is infectious and dangerous, but not spread by air. That is why there are hundreds of deaths from this epidemic instead of tens of thousands.

4. Emory University is well equipped to treat these brave doctors safely.

5. Both doctors are American citizens. That still has to mean something.

Is there zero risk? Nothing comes with zero risk. But refusing to bring Americans home for proper care would be to turn our backs on our own and reflect not caution, but cowardice.

Enough of the fear-mongering and innuendo. We have enough real fish to fry.
