When I heard that a world leader had said, “Netanyahu appears to be possessed by the devil,” I figured that Obama or Kerry had been talking into a “hot mic” again. But it turned out to be Nicaragua’s Ortega (the man Reagan so memorably called “a dictator in designer glasses”).

Is there something about Latin American strongmen and el diablo? In 2006, Chávez went to the U.N. and said, “The devil came here yesterday, and it smells of sulfur still today, this table that I am now standing in front of.” He was referring to President George W. Bush.

There are plenty of Americans, left and right, who regarded W. as the devil, or at least very bad. I think they deserve Chávez’s company. Netanyahu is playing the Bush role today: the world’s devil. Netanyahu leads the Little Satan, while Bush led the Great Satan.

Are we still the Great Satan, even with O and Biden and Kerry ’n’ them in charge? I’ll have to ask Khamenei, next time we talk. I’d hate to lose our position.
