Newt Gingrich: Obama’s Executive Amnesty Could Create ‘Civil War in His Own Party’
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said President Obama’s potential executive action on immigration could cause a “civil war in his own party.”
“I think that it may well be the final destruction of the modern Democratic party,” Gingrich said on The Laura Ingraham Show. “The idea that the president would unconstitutionally, and I think clearly illegally, by stroke of the pen change the world, I think most Americans will find very unacceptable.”
Gingrich said if Obama took executive action, House Republicans would pass a bill rejecting the action within days of returning to Washington. Every Democrat up for election in the Senate, he said, would then have to answer the question of whether they want to stand with Obama and Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) and lose. He noted that two Democrats in the Senate have already come out against the president’s proposed executive action, and he thinks that there is a panic growing on the left among people who think this could be a disaster.
