In Iraq, a Conflict of Visions (Neither of Which Worked)

by Rich Lowry

As a friend points out to me, Iraq frustrated the ideological assumptions of both Presidents Bush and Obama. Bush thought, to simplify, that Iraq minus the regime of Saddam Hussein would equal something like West Germany after World War II. That was wrong. Obama thought Iraq minus American involvement would equal something that was OK, or at least something we wouldn’t have to worry about too much because the country is not very important. That was wrong, and we are probably just at the beginning of the demonstration of how wrong it was.
