Audie Murphy – What a Warrior!

Text

Seventy years ago this week, the great American soldier and his comrades in the Third Platoon, 15th Infantry landed in France at Ramatuelle and saw immediate action against German soldiers. His squad pinned down in a vineyard by machine-gun fire, Sergeant Murphy, according to an official report — in the face of consistent fire, and even having a few hand grenades tossed at him — outflanked the Germans and “killed 8, wounded 3, and captured 11 of the enemy in approximately an hour, singlehandedly cleaning out the entire enemy position.” It’s an amazing tale of bravery that will take you but a minute or two to read. You can find it in the National Archives, here.
