One Eighth of Syria’s Population Has Fled the Country

Text

The United Nations reports that 3 million people are refugees from war-torn Syria — and another 6.5 million are displaced within the country’s borders. The number of refugees who have registered in other countries is up 1 million from this time last year. Via CNN:

Almost half of all Syrians have been forced to leave their homes amid the roughly three-year conflict, and one in eight has fled across the border. . . .

Most of the refugees are in countries neighboring Syria, including Lebanon (1.14 million), Jordan (608,000) and Turkey (815,000). Governments estimate that hundreds of thousands more are in their countries but unregistered, putting a strain on their economies, the U.N. said.

Last week the U.N. reported that, as of the end of April, 191,369 people have died since the conflict in Syria began in March 2011.
