by Victor Davis Hanson

In 1935, the great classicist F.L. Lucas (who did everything from translating Greek lyric poetry to authoring a standard work on Aristotle to topographical study of the battle of Pharsalus) wrote ”Splendid Isolation”, a poem assailing the ongoing appeasement of Hitler by the British. One couplet stands out and resonates today.
