The New York Daily News Drops the Redskins Name

With the 2014 NFL season set to kick off on Thursday, the New York Daily News announced it will omit the Washington Redskins’ team name and logo from its coverage. The newspaper called the name “a throwback to a vanished era of perniciously casual racial attitudes.” 

“Henceforth, in The News’ sports coverage, the team that has been known as the Redskins since 1933 will simply be called Washington,” the paper said in an editorial.

But the Daily News will go further than most other outlets that have dumped the name, such as the Washington Post editorial page or the Kansas City Star, among others: It will also refrain from using the team’s logo. ESPN’s Darren Rovell tweeted a picture of the newspaper’s alternative logo in today’s NFL preview issue (the picture also shows the Daily News referring to all other teams by their name, except for “Washington”):
