Roberts Rising

by Ramesh Ponnuru

Here are three reasons for thinking that Senator Pat Roberts (R., Kan.) is at a low point in this campaign and that he’s going to start doing better in the polls. 1) Each week that passes, he gets a little further away from his bitter primary. 2) He recognizes, I’m told, how badly he has screwed up and how much political danger he is in, and he’s no longer taking the race for granted. 3) The idea of an independent candidacy has a lot of appeal, but Greg Orman is going to be able to be defined as the de facto Democratic nominee — since that is what he is — and that is going to be rather less attractive in Kansas.
