‘A Constitutional Crisis for Fun and Profit’

by Rich Lowry

From my Politico column today on the president’s impeachment cynicism:

If you’re a digital fundraising maven at a major Democratic organization and you haven’t sent out an impeachment-themed email over the past few days, you either haven’t gotten the memo or you should be in a different line of work. The strategy is clearly to manufacture a panic on impeachment and wring every last fundraising dollar from it.

This can get Democrats only so far, though. The reality is that House Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit that they say is part of the nefarious impeachment plot will, even if successful, have little practical effect beyond establishing the precedent of Congress suing the president (a precedent Democrats may welcome if they lose the White House in 2016).

But Democrats hold the trump card in the tussle over impeachment. All reports are that President Obama is considering a sweeping action on immigration so clearly unlawful that it will, at the very least, pressure Republicans to consider impeachment more seriously. Just imagine the Democratic fundraising emails then!

Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer’s puppy-dog enthusiasm for invoking impeachment when discussing the president’s immigration plans last week suggest the White House is counting on a furious Republican reaction to its move. If this is the gambit (we’re still in the trial balloon stage for now), it is dime-store political nihilism.
