More Polling on RFRA and Gay Rights

by Ramesh Ponnuru

Marist refers to “penalties and fines” in its question, and finds 65 percent support for letting businesses withhold wedding services from same-sex couples. Mike Warren at the Standard points out that in February an AP poll found a 57 percent majority for the same position. He quotes a Washington Post story by Philip Rucker and Robert Costa that claims that Republicans who support the Indiana law are “out of step with a growing national consensus on gay rights.” I don’t see the evidence that the consensus to which they point exists, let alone that it’s growing. (They quote several pollsters but cite no data.)
