Perry on Economic Opportunity

by Yuval Levin

At the National Press Club today, former Texas governor Rick Perry gave the first real policy speech of his 2016 presidential campaign, and it’s well worth your while to read it

He took up the question of equal opportunity, spoke bluntly about the Republican Party’s failure to compete for the black vote (and to acknowledge some realities of race in America), and its resulting failure to offer voters a real and appealing conservative alternative to decades of liberal failures.

In its subject, tone, and (albeit preliminary) substance it was an ambitious and impressive performance. Here’s hoping it sets the tone for the coming campaign.
